Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (left)
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was built in honor of Emperor Wilhelm I and inaugurated on September 1, 1895. The original church building was designed by the architect Franz Schwechten. After severe damage in World War II, the ruin of the old tower was preserved as a memorial. Between 1959 and 1961, a modern new building was constructed next to the ruin according to the plans of the architect Egon Eiermann. Today, the Memorial Church is one of Berlin's most famous landmarks.
Elephant Gate - Berlin Zoo (right)
The Elephant Gate is one of the most famous entrances to the Berlin Zoological Garden and is located on Budapester Straße near the Zoo Aquarium. The gate was originally built in 1899 according to the plans of architects Carl Zwar and Rudolf Wahl and reconstructed between 1983 and 1985 after its destruction in World War II. Characteristic features are the two life-size sandstone elephants supporting an artfully designed pagoda roof. With its East Asian style, the Elephant Gate is now one of the most popular photo motifs in Berlin's City West.
