Kurfürstendamm (left)
The Kurfürstendamm, often simply called "Ku'damm", is Berlin's most famous shopping and strolling boulevard. The street is located in the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and is particularly known for its exclusive shops, hotels, restaurants and cafés. The official opening day of the boulevard is considered to be May 5, 1886, when the first steam tram reached the Zoological Garden. Originally planned as an elegant residential area, the Kurfürstendamm quickly developed into an important commercial and cultural center. In the 1920s, the boulevard became a symbol of the "Golden Twenties".
Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (right)
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was built in honor of Emperor Wilhelm I and inaugurated on September 1, 1895. The original church building was designed by the architect Franz Schwechten. After severe destruction in World War II, the ruins of the old tower were preserved as a memorial. Between 1959 and 1961, a modern new building was constructed next to the ruins, based on the plans of the architect Egon Eiermann. Today, the Memorial Church is one of Berlin's most famous landmarks.
